Lottie Tour 2021

November 12, 2021 Dr Cinzia Giannetti

Recently Lottie joined IMPACT as part of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week – it certainly seems a long time ago since Lottie last visited us!

Every year the Women’s Engineering Society Young Members’ Board (YMB) organises a ‘Lottie Tour’ as a way to capture the interest of a younger engineering audience by showing current engineers giving Lottie Dolls a tour of their workplace – and show how varied and exciting it is to work in engineering!

This year, Lottie was delighted to shadow IMPACT researcher, Dr Cinzia Giannetti and learn about all the latest developments with her work on smart manufacturing.  Dr Giannetti is currently exploring novel Machine Learning (ML) techniques and developing innovative toolkits to stimulate effective adoption and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ML in industry.

Lottie attended Dr Giannetti’s workshop ‘Industrial Digital Technologies (IDTs) adoption in the COVID Pandemic‘ to learn about her collaboration with Tata Steel, Vortex, Crown Packaging Ford and Sony.  The panel examined the challenges, successes and failures of the rapid adoption of Industrial Digital Technologies during the COVID Pandemic era and explored the lessons learned that can be carried forward.

Lottie also helped Dr Giannetti pack her science kits for the Swansea Science Festival! After receiving her own Super Science Kit, Lottie then followed the guidance with the online tutorial to create ‘Chemistry in bubble wrap’!  In the experiment Lottie learned how to use a smartphone  as a piece of scientific equipment.  She used the camera to monitor colour changes to detect pH in various solutions.
